Challenge
Community Health Systems (CHS) wanted to fortify its telephony network protection against fraud calls and prevent crippling TDoS attacks on their essential ICU and Emergency Room phone lines.
CHS is a Fortune 500 healthcare company based in Franklin, Tennessee. It is one of the largest providers of general hospital healthcare services in the U.S. in terms of number of acute care facilities. CHS owns, operates, or leases almost 160 hospitals across 22 states.
The healthcare client understood how a limited TDoS attack targeting a hospital's ICU or ER could potentially be debilitating for providing critical patient care and expose the health care provider to substantial liability. To avoid the possibility of TDoS attackers demanding ransom, CHS wanted to bolster its voice network security.
The CHS leadership also wanted to prevent fraud calls from connecting to patients in their rooms. Another threat vector was monitoring fax activity to hospital patient data collection points such as imaging equipment to stay in compliance with HIPPA regulations.
Threat Vectors
- TDoS Attacks
- Social Engineering & Financial Fraud
- Privacy & Information Theft
Approach
The SecureLogix® Call Defense™ System provides call voice intrusion prevention (IPS), a voice firewall, and the Red List threatening callers database, along with detailed call analytics and reporting.
The Call Defense System gave member hospitals visibility and control over all inbound and outbound voice traffic. The solution provided real-time alerts to identify patterns of suspected fraud and TDoS calls and stop them from impacting the voice network. Malicious calls were blocked before they impacted hospital operations and patient services.
Result
CHS now has the ability to detect and block malicious and threatening calls in real-time. All member hospitals have prevented TDoS attack calls that could result in operational disruption, loss of phone services and patient data.
